N2 - The photochemistry of hexachloroplatinate(IV) paradoxically depends on the solvent. Chain photosolvation of the complex occurs in water, chloroform, and acetonitrile, with the photolysis mechanism being quite identical in water and chloroform, whereas the formation of a chain carrier in acetonitrile has a peculiar feature. In alcohols, the photochemical reaction is not a chain process, being a combination of photosolvation and photoreduction of Pt(IV) to Pt(II). It has been shown that the principal factors accounting for the solvent effect are the values of the rate constants of key reactions.
