N2 - Pyrite is one of the main rock-forming components for Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous black shale Bazhenov Formation. The correlation between pyrite and total organic carbon is found to be relatively high; however, some deficiencies of this hypothesis are discussed. Interlayers with high pyrite and low total carbon contents are encountered in the transition zone where the Bazhenov Fm. grades into Podachimov pack and into the underlying Georgiev Fm. The presence of pyrite in such layers is associated with the diagenetic migration of sulfide-bearing solutions and their deposition on geochemical barriers. It has been established that in some sections with level of the OM catagenesis greater than mesocatagenesis (MC2) there is no correlation between pyrite and TOC due to catagenetic transformation and redistribution of the organic matter.
