abstract = "The soot abatement in diesel exhaust is a very important task in particular because fine soot particles inhaled by humans do serious damage to their health. The mathematical modelling of soot filtration and catalytic oxidation in diesel particulate filters can help in finding more promising filter design, filter porous materials, running regime, and so on. The used mathematical model consists of nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations. The nonlinearities can cause rather steep non-stationary profiles of concentrations and temperature which propagate (rather slowly move) along the filter. So the standard numerical schemes are not appropriate here. The new modelling methodology is proposed which is based on the three existing methods and takes advantages of each of them: the method of lines, the running scheme, and the second-order Rosenbrock method with stepsize adjustment algorithm. Verification of the mathematical model and numerical method is done by means of comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data. The mathematical modelling is realized with taking into account the mass transport of soot particles of each diameter from a log-normal particle size distribution. For estimating the kinetic parameters the method of Errorsin-Variables Model with numerical integration is applied.",
