N2 - The depth D of penetration of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field into air above a flat surface of sputtered gold covered with a 1.65-µm-thick zinc sulfide layer was studied by the noncontact method of partial shielding of the field of SPPs generated by the terahertz radiation of the Novosibirsk free electron laser (NovoFEL) in the wavelength range λ = 141–356 µm (0.8–2.1 THz). The observed quadratic growth of D with increase in λ is in qualitative agreement with the impedance model of the dependence D(λ), which takes into account the gold permittivity dispersion. From the measured values of D and the SPP propagation length L, the dispersion of the permittivity of sputtered gold was determined. The obtained result is consistent with the data attained by the surface plasmon interferometry method and may be useful in designing SPP sensors and developing plasmonic optical and integrated circuits of the THz range.
