N2 - This chapter is dedicated to the general volume-discretization method, known as the discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The main DDA equations are presented for local non-magnetic materials, including a non-absorbing host medium. This framework describes not only the conventional scattering problems but also excitation by arbitrary complex vector beams, as well as the calculation of emission (decay-rate) enhancement and electron energy-loss probability. Many available DDA formulations and important numerical issues are also discussed. Special attention is paid to practical aspects of the DDA simulations, including the comparison of the two most popular open-source codes: DDSCAT and ADDA.
