N2 - Duplications are the powerful mechanism underlying the origin of new genes. In this study we describe several duplicated genes retained after the whole genome duplication in the genome of recently sequenced and assembled sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). We demonstrate that genes encoding heat shock proteins and transcription factors participating in intercellular communication and sex determination are mostly retained after genome doubling.
