Organisational unit: Research Laboratory
The laboratory for the study of strong interactions in e + e- annihilation and tau-lepton decays analyzes the data accumulated in the experiment with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II electron-positron collider (SLAC, USA). The work is carried out as part of the international collaboration BABAR. The experiment was carried out from 1999 to 2008 at a center-of-mass energy of about 10 GeV, mainly at the maximum of the Y (4S) resonance. Data with an integrated luminosity of about 500 fb-1 were collected, which correspond to the production of about 500 million pairs of B-mesons, 500 million pairs of tau-leptons, about 3 billion charmed hadrons. In experimental runs at energies below the B-meson production threshold, about 100 million Y (2S) and about 120 million Y (3S) mesons were produced. Using the accumulated statistics, world-class studies are being conducted on the physics of B- and D-mesons, tau-leptons, as well as on spectroscopy of charmonium and bottomonium. The same data allows us to carry out unique measurements of exclusive cross sections of e + e- annihilation using the radiation return method, as well as studies in two-photon physics. Currently, a comparable data set is available only in the Belle experiment.
