Organisational unit: Research Laboratory
The laboratory participates in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland. The experiment started to record events in 2010, the center-of-mass energy of 8 tera-electron-volt (TeV) being achieved in 2012, and then 13 TeV in 2015. Since that time, the LHC experiments became the main source of the new information for high-energy physics, especially concerned with search of ''new physics'' beyond the Standard Model. The lab researchers are involved in physics analysis, namely the search for Higgs boson decay to four leptons and study its properties, they participate in groups responsible for detector calibration and particle reconstruction tuning, they make substantial contribution to experiment' software development and support. It is planned to increase the LHC proton collision intensity up to about 10 times in 2024. The significantly increased statistics should make possible more precise measurements, both for ''standard'' and ''new'' physics, but higher event rate would require the upgrade of many of ATLAS detector systems. Our staff take part in studies of liquid argon calorimeter behavior at high rates, and in development of new electronics for electromagnetic calorimeter trigger signals digital processing
