Profile Information

The Laboratory of Radiation Biology was created at NSU under the supervision by Professor of the Oxford and Novosibirsk Universities, Doctor of Biological Sciences Dianov Grigory Leonidovich, Head of the Laboratory of Genome Stability Mechanisms at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The main focus of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology is to conduct scientific studies, preclinical trials, as well as the development of medical technology for the treatment of malignant tumors using boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), using a neutron source developed at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) SB RAS. Theoretically, this method of therapy is based on the specific capture by the cancer cells of the stable boron-10 isotope, followed by treatment of the cells with a stream of epithermal neutrons, which leads to the decay of the boron atom, local radiation and selective death of the cancer cells. The main problem that prevents the widespread use of this method in the clinic is the selective delivery of boron compounds to cancer cells, and this is where the efforts of chemists and biologists should be focused. A therapeutically significant concentration of boron in cancer cells can be achieved by creating effective agents for its delivery directly to the tumor. Professor Dianov plans to focus laboratory research on the search for fundamentally new boron carriers that selectively accumulate only in cancer cells. In addition, one of the tasks of the laboratory is to study the nature of the damage caused by intracellular decay of the boron atom and the mechanisms of their repair, in particular, the identification of the repair system, which most aggressively interferes with the effectiveness of BNCT. Inhibition of this repair system will enhance the therapeutic effect of BNCT.
Laboratory research is supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation, RFBR and the Top 5-100 program. The Radiation Biology Laboratory is interested in expanding the staff and is hosting students, graduate students and new employees to work on this interesting and important problem.
